Women going solo at the NSA – Marianne Meyer

Exhibition: RECLAMATION by Janet Solomon

The Mercury (Durban)

29 Oct 1997

“I’ve got to a point where I try to find a place where oil paint and spirit make a mixture. My aim is to reimbue painting with the nature of the spiritual.

“To begin to call myself a painter I will always be learning, as Rodin puts it, ’the secrets from the magicians’”

Solomon has drawn directly from Buddhist, Christian and Hindu imagery. There are narrative portraits of St Christopher and Lazarus.

Her paintings, Three Trees, are Durban landscapes echoing Rembrandt’s etching of the same theme.

Her work has strong connections with the past and tradition and is based on romantic ideals of beauty and aesthetic.
